Sodium nitrate is a form of salt also known as Chilean saltpeter due to the large natural deposits found in Chile.
Sodium nitrate was also known as ‘white gold’ during the 19th century. Wars raged over lands rich in sodium nitrate.
It is colorless crystals or white powder, liquefies easily in the air and soluble in water and liquid ammonia. It will burn and explode when mixed with organics.
